Some design alternatives
After doing some research on the internet I have come up with 4 relatively simple antenna designs.
1. A Vertical colinear with 5dB gain at

2. A omnidirectional colinear dipole with 6dB gain at

3. A 'Downpipe' Slotted Waveguide Omni that should have an awesome gain at

While they are all interesting I think I will go with #2. It is stronger than 1 and more practical for placing inside a window than 3.
My only obstacle now is to purchase a suitable tail to connect from my DLink card to my antenna. This is likely to take some time to acquire so in the meantime I have moved on to other things.
